Bourbon Tasteoffs

This episode finds us tasting different Jefferson's products. As a non-distilling producer, how can they differentiate their product from other NDP's that might share the same juice. We find out they send some of it on a journey. They call it the Ocean series. Yup, they put the barrels on a ship and set sail. They use the heat, humidity, and waves to initiate more contact with the charred oak barrels. Come join us to find out if it makes a difference or should we just search a different MGP product from Indiana that so many other NDP's use.

This episode has everyone bringing an unopened bottle they have never tried before. Not only is it a double blind, but also almost a triple blind. Some cool bottle shapes and designs as some could double as decanters to be used again. Listen as the hosts share stories of some vacations had and vacations to be had. A toasted bourbon is a bourbon that has already been aged in new charred oak barrels and then finished in a toasted barrel. The toasted barrel is more gently heated which creates a toasted flavor on the wood. A distiller can decide if they want a light toast or a heavy toast depending on the desired taste. Josh brings some unopened bourbons he purchased on his first trip to the bourbon trail. Is great to hear his story about coming across these bottles. We share in his experience by tasting some of the bottles he has been holding onto for over 4 years. Being new to bourbon at the time he was budget minded when making these purchases. Let's find out if any of these options were good purchase decisions and if they can hold their own after they make it through this round. In this weeks episode Adam has us compare Tennessee whiskey to Texas whiskey. We find out that the Texas heat has a big influence on how fast the bourbon takes on the flavors of the barrel. Distillers are using all sorts of methods to add or mellow flavors in their whiskey. What style takes the title in this episode?

The weather in Wisconsin is nicer so we took the episode outside. Invited some friends over for a bourbon tasting and decided to make an episode out of it. Thank you to Joe and Andy for stepping up and helping with this tasteoff. We decided to take some 100 proof Bottled in Bond and pair them off against each other. The whole crew got to experience the tasting together and give their opinion on which bourbon was the best. Will you agree? 

It's officially in the books. We have tasted 48 whiskeys and have now crowned a quarterly champion. When we have 3 other quarterly champions we will taste them off against each other and decide what our year end BEST whiskey is. This one has a 1 in 4 chance of taking that title.
